Choosing the School for YOU

Choosing the School for YOU Hey everyone! So its almost April, and Im sure you are all freaking out about which school to choose.  If you are anything like me, you applied to several schools, which just makes your decision that much more difficult. Of course, this is the point where I say Choose Illinois! And while I think my school is a great choice, I know that there are other schools out there that may spark your interest just as much. My number one piece of advice is to be absolutely sure of your choice. I gave deposits to three different schools before I decided on Illinois. So I get that not being sure about where you want to go can cost you a lot of money and stress. The most  important thing to remember is that no matter where you go, you have the ability to make your time there a great one! Maybe a smaller school, where you can be a big fish in a small pond, is the place for you. Or maybe a big school, where you can be challenged to stand out from the crowd, is more your style. Whatever your decision may be, just make sure it is what YOU want. One of the schools I committed to was my parents  top pick for me because it was closer to home. I was not satisfied with that choice, and I finally just had to say something about it. Your parents should definitely weigh in, but in the end, it is ultimately your  choice. So go out there and do your research and pick a school that makes you feel like youre at home! I can honestly say, though, that Illinois is pretty cozy. ?? For many students, the idea that an argument displays a structure which can be evaluated on its own terms is not very difficult to grasp. The problem that confronts us addresses a fundamental pedagogical concern: Our task is to instill in the student the habit of clear thinking. When we send our students out into the world, we have to make sure that theyre prepared for it. This is not simply a matter of providing them with tools. Weve looked at logic that way — and weve approached teaching logic that way — for far too long. Certainly logic may be employed as a tool; it can serve as an incredibly powerful tool, as we who teach it know full well. But its not logic per se that we should be concerned with in our introductory courses. We want to teach our students how to think clearly and responsibly. There is certainly a moral edge to this view of the situation, and the manner in which we approach our pedagogical concern will not be without further philosophical prejudice. Ours is Aristotelian. We have found that giving our students the basics of term logic serves our purpose well. We do not introduce it as a tool for argument analysis — a strong case can easily be made for the superiority of truth-functional logic in that respect — we present it, rather, in the way that a kindergarten teacher brings toys into the classroom. We can infer from the financial ratio that they intend to grow organically and not by outside financing. The debt level they have is perceived to be very manageable. They are merely taking advantage of debt to provide a measure of added income generating assets. The bulk of their growth and capital needs would all be derived from their sales. The Continental Airlines is somewhat in between the two extreme types of companies. They are aggressive enough to take considerable debt but not too optimistic as to reach 4. 25 in their long term debt obligation to equity. Their long term debt to equity ratio is merely 1. 8 which seems small enough compared to AMR corporation. It can be inferred that the continental corporation has a moderate outlook compared to the two others. Continental is optimistic enough to take advantage of loans to increase their coverage and business operations (Gold, 2006). They are not overly optimistic however to borrow more than twice the amount of their own equity. The economic situation has to be favorable for them to be able to pay their debts. They are not in a dangerous position however, like AMR Corporation with extreme amounts of debts. Both tickets for both the bands are $150 per ticket – but one is in the state of Nevada, which is about 4 hours away (not including traffic), while one is less than 10 minutes away from my home. Though both bands cost the same, I value Hot Stuff’s concert at $225. I am debating on which two bands to invest my time in seeing, or even second thinking whether or not I should stay home and rest in preparation for my GRE exam in the morning. Marginal utility is a vital economic concept used to determine how much an item a consumer will buy. By definition, marginal utility is the additional satisfaction a consumer gains from consuming one more unit of a good or service. In my particular case, I am willing to pay a marginal utility of $225 per ticket, drive 4 hours to Las Vegas, and return to Anaheim once the concert is over around 1 AM. But does that make any sense for me to spend almost 12 hours, the night before my exam, attending a concert in another state? Absolutely not! Although the satisfaction of attending a concert I’ve been waiting several years to see will be spectacular, the amount of satisfaction that comes with resting well and earning a high GRE score will be much greater. Giving up my favorite band, Hot Stuff, would be the first off the list. A good nights’ rest is simply the next best alternative to dismiss the concert. The Good Times concert at the Anaheim House of Blues sounds very tempting because the venue is extremely close to my home. Similar to the next best alternative in the aforementioned, utilizing the night before my test to rest and study is the opportunity cost. Because I consider myself quite a rational person, I [must] systemically and purposely [do] the best [I can do] to achieve [my] objective, given the available opportunities [I am] faced with [Principle 3. 6]. By comparing the benefits and marginal costs of staying home, I am faced with a much larger economic benefit in my future due to my high score and acceptance to the school of my choice. I am reflecting a positive marginal change with my decision in selecting to choose to rest at home; a marginal change is a small incremental adjustment to an existing plan of action [Principle of Microeconomics. 2012. 6]. By spending my night at home reviewing my flashcards, I am demonstrating how well I am planning for my future. By comparing costs and benefits, I will be able to make a rational decision. My behavior changed when I realized my actions could possibly affect my GRE score and admissions into a prestigious program. In all, my decision to choose the next best alternative to stay home to rest and study will be driven by the marginal benefit exceeding the marginal cost [Principle of Microeconomics. 2012. 7]. The benefit of staying home to better prepare myself for my exam was much higher than spending a few hours at a concert and spending money – as I should be saving for graduate school. The next best alternative to both those possible actions will be to stay home. The intangible measure of my choice reflects implicit opportunity costs. Resting at home rather than expending my energy at the concerts has no currency value, therefore the implicit costs related to the forgone benefits are not easily accounted for. The cost of not being rested before my exam is enormous. I will be sacrificing my future education and career goal. While my decision reflects implicit opportunity cost, explicit costs are the cash or equivalent expenses for which I would pay to attend either concert. In conclusion, the opportunity cost for staying home is much higher than if I were to attend the concerts. The value for my bright future by earning more during my career and gratefulness to be educational activity counterbalances the lost concerts and enjoyment.
